Home Brewing Ingredients and Why They are so Important

S. Michael Windsor asked:

Home Brewing Ingredients and Why They Are So Important

Home brewing beer can be quite a fun and educational process. Although there are many different ways a home brewer can make his or her home brewed beer, there are some essential ingredients which must be included at all times when homebrewing. These main homebrew ingredients are malt, hops, yeast, sugars, and water.

The first most basic homebrewing ingredient is malt. The most commonly used is barley malt. There are also other types of things such as corn and rice which can be added to the home brewed beer, but these are considered as adjuncts. Barley malt comes in two different types, 2-row malt and 6-row malt where 2-row malt has larger grains and less husk.

The whole malting process begins by simply steeping the grains until they are in germination mode, then they are quickly dried. What happens is the enzymes which convert the starches to sugars are “frozen” in their tracks until the steeping, or mash, begins during the home brewing process.

The next ingredient is hops. Hops add the flavors, aromas and bitterness often found in beers for over 1,000 years. They act as a balancing factor in home brewing with their special oils which are released during the brewing process. Hops consist of many different levels of acidity and can be purchased in pellet, leaf, or whole hop forms.

The next home brewing ingredient is yeast. There are two types of yeasts for home brewing. The two types of home brewing yeast are ale and lager yeasts. The main differences between the two yeasts are through the characteristics they provide to the end home brewed product. Ale yeasts offer a much more “floral” aroma and such and are much easier to handle during fermentation for many new and experienced brewers. Ale yeast is a top fermenting yeast, which means it ferments and foams at the top and then settles to the bottom. Ale yeast can also ferment and much higher temperatures that lager yeasts.

Lager yeasts actually require much lower temperatures for fermentation and are referred to as “bottom-fermenting” yeasts. It is the lower temperatures during fermentation which keep the yeasts from providing similar characteristics such as a floral aroma like that of ales.

Most yeasts are manufactured commercially and can be purchased in liquid or dry form for home brewers.

Water, of course, is one of the most essential ingredients and it can also alter the outcome of your end home brew product. Waters come in many “styles”. For example, water in London could be much more “minerally”, or hard, that that of water from Los Angeles, California. These characteristics are actually considered in the official styles of beers. In order to keep in line with the official style of the beer, many additions will have to be made in order to emulate the hardness or softness of the water where the original style came from.

Sugars are another thing which many home brewers may use during the home brewing process, especially for such beers as Belgian Strong ales and such. These sugars are added in order to affect the taste and alcohol levels of the home brewed beer, giving the yeast much more sugar to ferment. In addition, priming sugars are often used for the bottling process in order to add carbonation in the bottle.

The Missing Link Between Gout And Alcohol Consumption

Lisa McDowell asked:

Although there are many factors that can contribute to a build up of uric acid within your system, alcohol consumption appears to be a leading factor in gout development. However, this doesn’t mean that people who drink alcohol modestly on a regular basis will develop gout. Furthermore, research has discovered that different types of alcoholic beverages have different impacts on uric acid levels.

For hundreds of years, medical researchers have suspected that gout is linked to specific lifestyles such as diets high in red meat, salt and alcohol, combined with little to no exercise. This type of lifestyle, which many people in Western countries tend to adopt as they become older and closer to middle age, is very much like the lifestyle that was once led by English kings. In fact, gout is often called “the disease of kings”.

Today, researchers that have conducted studies on men in relation to alcohol consumption and its link to gout, have found that men who drank excessive amounts of certain forms of alcohol - especially beer - greatly increased their risk for developing gout.

What has been discovered is alcohol may not only affect the production of uric acid, but also its removal from the body. It appears that when alcohol is changed into lactic acid, it decreases the quantity of uric acid that the kidneys are able to remove from the body. The reason is because uric acid has to compete with the lactic acid in order to be removed by the kidneys.

In addition, researchers have found that certain types of alcohol have less risk of causing gout than others. Of all the alcohols studied, it appears that Beer poses the highest risk of gout, while moderate consumption of wine or spirits has little to no increased risk of gout.

What’s so risky about beer? Some researchers believe that beer has a non-alcoholic ingredient that makes the increase of gout even higher than other alcoholic beverages. Beer is apparently the only alcoholic beverage to include purines, and an excessive amount of purines in the system can lead to higher production of uric acid. Conversely, other researchers do not believe it is the purines in the drink that increase the risk of gout. These researchers don’t believe that having too many purines in the diet increase the risk of gout. Their reasoning is based on a study that was conducted on vegetarians from Taiwan who indulged in a diet that was high in purines. The study revealed that theses individuals actually had a lower risk of developing gout.

So, if it’s not the purines in beer then what is it? Some experts have a hunch that excessive beer drinkers have a higher risk in contracting gout due to their lifestyle. For instance, a person who drinks wine usually has their alcoholic beverage with a meal, or with healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, crackers and cheese. A beer drinker, on the other hand, will often indulge in eating salty and fatty snacks such as peanuts and chips, while they sit and watch TV on the couch hour after hour. Thus, enthusiastic beer drinkers are likely to have a more sedentary lifestyle.

Regardless of the alcohol beverage you enjoy, you can dramatically reduce your risk of developing gout by drinking modestly (IE a glass of wine or beer per day). Overindulging in alcohol on occasion isn’t going to have a dramatic effect on your chances of getting gout, but regular overindulgence may eventually lead to a serious pain in the big toe.

Things To Know When Buying A/V Equipment

Tony Scorch asked:

When buying A/V (audio and visual) equipment in the Orlando area, you have many choices. No matter where you buy you need to know what is out there. Shop around and do your research online so you know you are getting the best quality and product for your money. Whether you are buying a home theatre system or looking for someone to host a business conference or media event, the knowledge that you obtain before buying A/V equipment is pertinent to your being satisfied with your purchase and that you are able to meet the needs of your event with professional equipment.

Buying or renting A/V equipment is an important decision. If you are planning on renting the equipment make sure that the rental store will give you service and help you not only put up the equipment but have someone on standby while your meeting, concert, and any other event is going on to help you repair or modify the A/V equipment while you using it. Most people don’t know how to install optical front projection screens or to operate equipment for a live event production. You do not want to leave anything to chance, so make sure the service is provided.

If you are shopping in the home theatre system market you really want some expert advice about how to set up your home theatre system. You need to know how to set up the screen to provide for the best viewing angle. The audio equipment needs to set to give you the best sound no matter where you sit in the room. You want that real theatre quality sound with the rich bass and the sharp tenors. The furniture in the room and the shape of the room is pertinent to the sound quality. Your local A/V professional will take all that into mind and advise you to the best arrangement for your home theatre equipment.

If you are buying A/V equipment for a bar or pub, you are making an investment that will bring in and keep customers for a long time. Most sports enthusiast will pick a bar where the beer is cold, the service is friendly, and the game can be seen on the big screen as with the optical front projection screens. Your establishment will bustle with excitement and the talks about you’re A/V system will be the buzz amongst sports bar enthusiasts.

If you are looking to put on a live event production like a concert or a stage show, you would probably want to contract someone to provide your A/V equipment. Setting up a large production takes time. You probably have more on your mind than to deal with setting up audio equipment and making sure the big screen featuring the artist is set up and functional. Let the professionals do it. You will be sure of the quality and at the same time you will know that you have the service to back up the product. With A/V equipment people around you, your live event production will go off with out a hitch.

Home made ginger beer question:I have to much,What to do?

hunglofo asked:

I have 4 ginger beer plants that are 10 days old but I dont have enough bottles to bottle them all.
Each plant makes around 7 litres of ginger beer once mixed with water, sugar and lemon. What would happen if I halved those ingredients but put one whole plant with it?To much pressure?

Any ideas about what would happen if I mixed all four plants together in a large glass bottle and added a couple of litres of water and sugar and put an air lock on it and left it for a couple of weeks and then bottled that?

As to why I have 4 ginger beer plants well I misread some internet instructions on how to make ginger beer.
The ingredients read “you will need 250mls water,yeast,7 teaspoons of ginger and seven teaspoons of sugar”which I hastily mixed all together.
.Well you are supposed to start off the plant with yeast,water,1 teaspoon of ginger and sugar and then feed it 1 teaspoon each of ginger powder and sugar every day for seven days(or more if you want).
Rather than waste this mix I separated it into 7 jars and added water to make 7 ginger beer plants.I have 4 left.

husband is allergic to beer?

Beachbumminblonde asked:

Husband is allergic to beer….?
Husband has established that he is deathly allergic to beer. Figuring it’s probably the hops… He has drank malt liquor a couple of times with no problem.

Is “hops” the only ingredient that makes beer different than malt liquor?

Fast and Healthy Techniques to Lose Weight

Stephanie Larkin asked:

The summer months are in full swing, so it is time to pull out the shorts and swim suits for some time in the sun. Unfortunately, this time of year, many people are struggling with the notion of showing more skin because of unsightly extra pounds. For many individuals, this is a situation that is dealt with each summer season. However, there is no need to fret about getting into shape for the summer season. Starting slow is the best way to make a change for the better.

In order to start shedding some weight, there are a few simple tricks and strategies which you can start incorporating into your daily routine. Check out these quick and easy techniques for a slimmer you:

Exercise. There’s no avoiding the fact that exercise is the best way to reshape your body. Of course, losing weight isn’t the only reason to stay active. Most doctors recommend a daily workout routine in order to maintain overall health.

Try starting a half-hour to hour daily workout routine. Make sure to start slow in order to avoid getting discouraged or injuring yourself. Also, don’t forget to do weight training. Cardio is great for burning calories, but muscle increases the efficiency of your metabolism.

Drink more water. People who do not get enough liquids tend to hold toxins in their body. Staying hydrated flushes all of the garbage out of your system. Once these harmful elements are removed, everything runs more efficiently. This can cause a person’s complexion to clear, increase energy, and even get rid of a few pounds by stimulating the metabolism. In addition to cleaning the body, a consistent flow of water discourages the storage of water weight and keeps you from feeling bloated and heavy.

There are many different schools of thought on how much water an adult should ingest per day. Those that regularly participate in physical activity may need more than those who do not. The best bet is to ask a doctor and set a daily water goal.

Simplify your drink order. Slowing down on the soda, juice, coffee or beer makes reaching your daily water goal easier. In addition to distracting you from H2O, these liquids add hundreds of calories on to each meal and provide little nutritional benefit. By sticking to ice water during lunch or dinner, you can enjoy your meal more thoroughly and cut about 200 calories a day out of your diet.

Eat more. That’s right! Eat more often. Many people sabotage their diets by starving themselves or only eating once a day. This sends the body into panic mode, and it will fight to hold onto every ounce of fat. Eating breakfast and having four or five small meals a day has the opposite effect. Once the body is used to the routine, it is more likely to burn energy reserves evenly throughout the day.

People who have many small meals a day also tend to eat more on average than those who choose to have one or two. The difference, however, is that these micro-meals tend to be healthier, like single servings of fruit or vegetables. These nutrient-rich foods fill you up with smaller portions and provide consistent energy. After a few weeks of eating more regularly, your body will begin to crave them.

Make time for meals. How many meals do you take in the car, in front of the TV, or at your desk? These quick bites are detrimental to your weight. Slowing down and paying attention to what you eat can help you lose weight no matter what’s on the menu. Sit down at a quiet table and spend at least 20 minutes eating your meal. You will eat more slowly and allow your body to tell you when it has had enough. This option is another great way to spend some time with family or friends.

Lose Weight Safely. Remember that these tips can only work for you if they are followed consistently. Implement the changes slowly, and you will begin to make smart choices automatically. Don’t become discouraged by the scale. Avoid weighing yourself everyday so that you don’t worry about minor fluctuations. A healthy weight loss is rate is about one or two pounds a week. Any faster and your body is burning precious muscle instead of fat. In the end, losing weight is about becoming healthier. Make your health your top priority when setting your goals and pay close attention to your level of fitness.

Just a few changes to your eating habits and daily routine can kick start your weight loss journey. If you are serious about dropping pounds and staying healthy, make sure to consult your doctor before starting any serious fitness or diet program.
